After using the same Smartwater bottle for a month straight on the trail I began using a few at home too, but wasn't fond of the negatives of using a disposable bottle. These are as close as I've seen to a direct replacement. Yes it's more difficult to squeeze but it's also much sturdier so that's a great trade off as far as I'm concerned.
For some feedback, the extra ear with the blue cord is a nuisance and I cut mine off immediately. As another reviewer said, the strap that hold the cap should be longer and that could then be used to clip if desired, just like a nalgene. It's too small to even put your finger in, which is really handy when you want to carry several, or it and other things. I really think it could be streamlined by removing the ear and extra cord and keeping the lid strap but making it longer.
I'm happy they sell squirt tops for cheap, they're identical to smart water tops if you have some. Would buy a cap with a longer strap if they sold it.
I just received 4 of these in the mail. I am on west coast but I received these in less than 48 hours after ordering. WOW. Already love them and cannot wait to use them for backpacking and hiking. I also do frequent same day travel for work and already see this as an excellent addition to my typical carry on bag.
Finally, a replacement for smartwater bottles. I like the lack of flavor retention and volume markings.
Convenient that it mates with my Sawyer Squeeze.
So much lighter than my traditional Nalgene.
While I like the Vesica bottles, the Thruhiker bottles are easier to drink from.
All in all, you hit this one out of the park!
Thanks for the great reveiw, Martin! We're so glad to hear you're loving the ThruBottle.
First I like that this is the familiar shape of a smart water bottle since I'm so used to that design. Also, my water has absolutely zero plastic taste when using this bottle. I'm still waiting to test this when hot water. The bottle feels great in hand and seems to be built from a very durable material.
A few things to offer:
1- the inside edge of the bottle neck is still quite sharp. It would be great if that was filed down a bit from the factor. It makes for a weird sensation when you are used to smooth water bottles but I'll try to file away the sharp edge myself.
2- I wish the bottle cap strap was a bit longer. It's a little bit awkward to me using a bottle with the cap strapped on so it may take some getting used to, but it seems to short to me.
3- it's awesome that this bottle had markings on the side to message 3 with. I wish they had some ink so they were a bit easier to read but I'm sure ink would rub off quickly.
Overall great product but I'm not sure it will replace the smart water bottle for me.
Thanks for the thoughtful review, we appreciate your feedback! Our next batch of the bottles will come with an improvement for the sharp edge, in the meantime we've had success with filing them down as you mentioned. Longer string is in the works as well. Stay tuned for updates!
I love the liter bottle as it will work well for backpacking. But, someone here asked about maybe a 3/4 liter version that would fit better into her front pack sleeve. I second that request, but more because it will fit better into the side pocket of my day pack, without hitting my arms or leaning out to the side. I want to use your bottle on my day trips, as well.
Thanks for your review and the feedback! We're hoping to offer different sized variants in the future, a smaller version has been a popular ask!
